Quality Time
by Karen R. Porter

Feed each rat
a special treat
by hand.

difficult words
when your son
is just learning
how to read.

Teach your dog
but make him do it
in his head.

Go down to the pond,
and talk foreign policy
with a group of frogs.

Open a checking account
for a tree.

Tell your cat
she reminds you
of a Rilke sonnet,
then make her guess
which one.

Karen R. Porter lives in the Pinelands of South Jersey, where she does
conservation field work.  Some of her writing has recently appeared in
Concho River Review, Pinyon, PMS: poemmemoirstory, and Wavelength.
